প্রিয় SSC শিক্ষার্থী বন্ধু, আমরা নিয়ে এসেছি তোমাদের English For Today (Classes 9 and 10) এর Unit 14 এর কবিতাগুলোর আলোচনা। কবিতাগুলো বোঝার সুবিধার জন্য থাকছে প্রতিটি কবিতার Paraphrase (সরল ভাষায় কবিতাটির পাঠ) ও কবিতায় আলোচ্য বিষয়গুলোর সারসংক্ষেপ বা Themes নিয়ে Model লেখা। সঙ্গে থাকবে ব্যতিক্রম ও জটিল Vocabulary List । তোমরা এগুলো অধ্যয়ন ও অনুশীলনের মাধ্যমে কবিতাগুলো পুরোপুরি বুঝতে ও আত্মস্থ করতে সক্ষম হয় উঠবে বলে আমাদের আশা। Unit 14, Lesson 3 এ অন্তর্ভুক্ত Charles Kingsley এর বিখ্যাত কবিতা The Sands of Dee এর Paraphrase দিয়েই শুরু হচ্ছে SSC বন্ধুদের সঙ্গে আমাদের যাত্রা – শুভকামনা প্রার্থী।
প্রথমেই আসছে কবিতাটির Paraphrase – সহজ ভাষায় কঠিন বিষয়টিকে বুঝিয়ে বলার নামই Paraphrase। Paraphrase পড়ার মাধ্যমে একজন শিক্ষার্থী text টি বুঝতে ও প্রকৃতভাবে শিখতে অগ্রসর হয়। English Book BD মনে করে, এটি ইংরেজি সাহিত্য বুঝতে প্রচলিত মুখস্তবিদ্যার একটি কার্যকর বিকল্প। এসো, কবিতার paraphrase টি আমরা পড়ে নিই :
Paraphrase
As the stormy evening closes by, the speaker asks Mary to call the cattle home from the grazing field across the river Dee. Despite the violent gale (storm), Mary obliges and goes alone to bring back the livestock. Meanwhile, the high tidal waves creep along the shore repeatedly and there can be seen only flooded water all around. Misty atmosphere beclouds Mary and she drowns into these waves. Some boatmen see a floating object and surmise it to be weed or a fish. But they find it to be a tress of golden hair of Mary. They confirms that no salmon ever seemed brighter than the maiden’s hair. They row across the cruel, hungry waves and bury her beside the shore. But boatmen often hear the voice of Mary’s spirit calling her cattle back.
প্রিয় শিক্ষার্থী বন্ধু, এবার আসছে কবিতাটির Theme বা মূল আলোচ্য বিষয়গুলোর একটি সারসংক্ষেপ। তুমি পরীক্ষায় লেখার জন্য অবশ্যই এগুলো মুখস্ত করবে না, বরং, কবিতাটি উত্তমভাবে বোঝার জন্য এটি পড়বে। কখনোই, অন্যের লেখা হুবহু লিখবে না – তা কোন গাইডবই হোক, অন্যের তৈরি নোট হোক বা হোক আমাদের এই লেখাগুলি। এতে তোমার মেধা বিকাশের পথ শুরুতেই রুদ্ধ হয়ে যাবে। এবার এসো The Sands of Dee কবিতার আলোচিত Theme গুর সারমর্ম পড়ে নিই :
Theme
The main theme of the poem is the capricious cruelty of nature in the form of sea that takes away innocent lives. The speaker asks a maiden to call back the cattle across the river in a stormy evening. She obliges, goes alone, but never returns. She succumbs to the crawling, hungry tide of Dee. But the spirit of her aspirations is never dead since the boatmen still hear her ghostly voice calling the cattle. This indicates that the longing for the continuation of human journey has unexpected ending by the rules of nature.
